smiling woman with toothbrushHave you ever been convinced that you’re doing all the right things for your oral health — only to visit your dentist in Richardson to find out that you have cavities or other problems? It’s great that you’re diligent about brushing twice a day and flossing regularly, but if you’re not caring for your teeth with proper techniques, you might inadvertently be neglecting parts of your pearly whites. What area do people commonly forget to brush, and how can you up your game so you’re less likely to receive unpleasant news the next time you visit your dentist?

Don’t Forget the Inside of Your Teeth

As humans, we tend to focus on what we can see, which is the fronts of your teeth. We might also spend a considerable amount of time brushing the chewing surfaces of our pearly whites, especially the molars in the back. But do you brush the inside of your teeth, the part that faces your tongue and palate?

Many people forget to give this area the TLC it deserves, and as a result, plaque can build up there and lead to decay. You want to brush as much of the surface of each tooth as possible, including the part you don’t see right away when you look in the mirror.

How to Get a Thorough Clean

Little reminders about how to get the best clean for your mouth can make the difference between sound pearly whites and ones that will need future dental work. Here are some tips to help you be sure that your dental hygiene habits are up to par:

  • Be sure you brush your teeth for long enough. It should take you about two minutes to clean your whole mouth. Spend 30 seconds brushing the outer surfaces of your top teeth and 30 seconds brushing the inside. Do the same for your bottom row.
  • Use short strokes. Your strokes should be tooth-wide. If they’re longer, you’ll be more likely to miss little particles that get lodged between your teeth.
  • Be gentle. Don’t panic because you’ve been missing the inside of your teeth and then overcompensate by brushing too hard. Being overly aggressive can wear away at your enamel and weaken those precious pearly whites.
  • Floss and rinse. Flossing and rinsing with a fluoride-containing mouthwash add extra cleaning power to your routine and can help you get a thorough, whole-mouth clean.
  • Care for your tongue. Sometimes, people forget to clean their tongue. Bacteria can build up on this group of muscles and cause bad breath. Moreover, those bacteria can transfer to the surfaces of your teeth and cause plaque.

Your teeth deserve to be clean all over, so don’t forget to brush their insides. Your dentist in Richardson will be proud of you the next time you go in for an appointment!
