Avoiding Future Oral Health Problems By Removing Third Molars

Between 20 and 25 percent of people are born with anywhere between one and three wisdom teeth, and 35 percent are born without any. If you’re experiencing some tenderness and pain towards the back of your mouth, past your visible molars, this could be a sign that your wisdom teeth are beginning to grow. Typically, this occurs anywhere between the ages of 17 and 25. At Breckinridge Dental & Orthodontics, we offer pain-free wisdom tooth removal to help ease your discomfort and preserve your oral health.

Why Do My Wisdom Teeth Need To Be Removed?

If there isn’t enough room for your wisdom teeth to healthily grow into your mouth, then it can cause some serious issues if they aren’t removed. In these cases, we’ll likely suggest extracting them to prevent some of these issues from arising:

  • They could cause your emerged teeth to become misaligned, creating bite issues.
  • Cysts could form.
  • Upper-arch wisdom teeth could cause sinus pain and congestion.
  • Increased risk of cavities and gum disease.

Although some patients are able to keep their wisdom teeth without any risks, this isn’t always the case. If we examine your X-rays and notice that they will impact your oral health ,then we’ll let you know and suggest an appropriate treatment solution.

The Process of Having Wisdom Teeth Removed

X-ray of wisdom teeth

After examining your X-rays and determining the location and risk factors associated with your wisdom teeth, we’ll determine whether they’ll put your oral health at risk. If your tooth is clearly visible, we should be able to easily rock it out of its socket and remove it. However, if they’re underneath the gums, we’ll make a small incision and remove it by dividing it into smaller pieces. After the procedure, we’ll provide you with some aftercare instructions to help keep your mouth healthy and avoid complications while you’re healing.

If you have any questions or concerns after your procedure, don’t hesitate to contact our team. We’ll be more than happy to help!
